Paul’s words to Timothy in his second letter to him are so encouraging — and convicting!

Today’s insight comes from the word of God, which I think should be the foundation of our vocation as writers, as creators. Check out 2 Timothy 4:

In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge: Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction. For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.

Your task, your calling, your vocation, is as vital now in your own circles and in your own world to execute on what Paul is encouraging Timothy here to execute on — doing the hard work of a writer, of an evangelist, of a prophet, if you will, someone called to articulate moral truth.

In our day and age, and we can do that in a number of ways we are permitted to by God and the Holy Spirit to do that in a number of ways, stories, studies, devotionals, resources, whatever it is that God has laid in your heart, whatever those passion projects are. My encouragement to you. It’s to do what Paul encouraged Timothy to do.

Preach the word, be prepared, correct rebuke and courage, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, the hard work of being a writer, of sitting down in the chair, putting in the time, typing out the words.

Do the work of a writer, of an evangelist, for the glory of God and the good of the world.
