Understanding the Publishing Landscape

In today's publishing world, understanding the landscape is crucial as a GospelWise Author. Like I say: it’s a 2.0 world! The idea you need to seek a company isn’t the world we’re in. For some people, signing with a publisher is the best path for their publishing journey. For others (most?), what’s best for you and your book is to send it into the world as a fully empowered independent publisher.

The choices you make can impact your book and ministry. There are two main paths: traditional publishing and independent publishing. (With a third route that I would NOT recommend!)

Each of these paths have their own set of advantages and challenges. I want to empower you with what you need to not only make an informed choice. I want to empower you to publish your work yourself — a legit route I’ve been taking since 2008.

The Traditional Publishing Route

Traditional publishing often seems like the dream for many authors. And frankly, it’s just not the most feastable, or even the best route.

With this path, you usually sign with an agent, who then helps you prepare a book proposal. Then you will submit your full or partial manuscript to a publishing house. If accepted, they handle the printing, distribution, and marketing. However, this route is not as simple as it sounds.

First, getting your manuscript accepted can be highly competitive. Publishers receive countless submissions, and only a fraction gets through. If you're lucky enough to secure a deal, you will receive an advance — a sort of early payment where you’ll be fronted cash for future earnings that you’ll pay back with royalties earned on sales over time). You’ll typically get this payment in three parts: when you sign the contract, submit your final manuscript, then publish your book. This can take up to 2 years, from submission to publication, so even a generous advance won’t seem so large, especially when your agent takes their 15% cut.

The Independent Publishing Journey

Independent publishing has become a viable alternative for many (most?) authors. It’s the past I’ve taken since 2008 — even working as a freelancer for major Christian publishing companies. This route allows you to take control of your work from start to finish. Yeah, you’re also responsible for that process. Howeverr, you can craft your book, design your cover, and choose your distribution channels, all while retaining the rights to your content AND more of the profits.

Example on that point: For my 4.99 ebook, I get $3.44-ish royalties. Which is MORE than what you’re get from a traditional publisher, especially when an agent is involved.

While this path offers more freedom, it also comes with responsibilities. You’ll need to invest time and resources into learning the ins and outs of publishing. It’s why I call this GospelWise Author persona a Caretaker.

You get to caretake and steward your book. Which is a responsibility, and there is some work. However, the rewards can be significant, both financially and creatively.

The Slimy Side of Publishing

Unfortunately, there are lots of pitfals with the publishing landscape. Many authors fall prey to companies that promise the world but deliver little. These so-called publishing companies often charge exorbitant fees for services that are either subpar or unnecessary.

It's essential to recognize these traps. A legitimate publisher pays you to publish your book, not the other way around. If you find yourself needing to pay thousands for a package deal, it's time to reconsider your options. You shouldn’t pay to play the publishing game!

Google “how to publish a christian book” and you’ll get a wealth of information. Some good and helpful. It can also lead you down a rabbit hole of misleading results. Sponsored ads often dominate the top of the search results, promoting companies that may not have your best interests at heart.

Always approach these results with caution. Research the companies thoroughly, read reviews, and seek recommendations from fellow authors. This diligence can save you both time and money.

The Dangers of Overpriced Author Services

One of the most significant dangers in the publishing landscape is the prevalence of overpriced author services. Many companies market themselves as full-service publishers, but their offerings often fall short of expectations. They really aren’t publishers but printers who will ship you a garage full of books for you to sell on your own.

· High Costs: Some companies charge thousands for basic services, leaving you with little to show for it, things you can often find for far less money.

· Poor Quality: The quality of editing, design, and marketing can be subpar, leading to a final product that doesn’t reflect your vision.

· Limited Reach: Many of these companies do not have the connections needed to effectively market your book, leaving you to fend for yourself and sell yourself — just as you would if you went the full indie route anyway.

Before committing to any service, ask yourself: Is this worth the investment, and will I be able to earn back the money I spend with the books I sell? Often, the answer is no. There are more affordable and effective ways to publish your book.

What Author 2.0 Publishing Looks Like

Publishing in this Author 2.0 world is about empowerment and ownership. It’s about taking your message and sharing it with the world on your own terms. When you self-publish, you become the captain of your ship. You control every aspect of your project, from writing to marketing. This autonomy allows you to align your work with your faith and mission without compromise.

I also understand it can feel overwhelming! Never fear. I’ve gone down this road myself, as an independent creator embracing the joy and challenge of publishing my own works and owning my publishing journey. Believe me: If this Joe Blow can do it, so can you 🙂

I’ve launched CROSS + PEN as a roadmap to empower you in your publishing journey to ignite faith in your world with your book. Here are some other things to consider as you navigate it yourself.

Self-publishing benefits

The Benefits of Self-Publishing

Self-publishing offers several distinct advantages that traditional publishing often cannot provide:

· Full Creative Control: You decide the content, design, and marketing strategy.

· Higher Royalties: Keep a larger portion of your sales, allowing you to reinvest in future projects, grow your author ministry, and provide a living for yourself.

· Speed to Market: Publish your book when it’s ready, without waiting for a publisher's timeline, within months of finishing — and often literally in a weekend!

· Direct Reader Engagement: Build a community around your work and connect with your audience directly.

Feel confident in choosing the independent route. You’re not just an author; you’re a publisher. It’s an empowering, joyful route I’ve loved for almost two decades! So make an informed decision about what is best for your passion project and your special, spiritual vocation.

Finding the Right Support for Your Project

While independence is empowering, it doesn’t mean you have to go at it alone. Finding the right support can make a world of difference in your publishing journey. Here are some key areas where you may want to seek assistance:

· Editing: A professional editor can help refine your manuscript, ensuring clarity and coherence.

· Cover Design: A striking cover can make your book stand out in a crowded marketplace.

· Marketing: Understanding your target audience and how to reach them is crucial for success.

· Publishing Platforms: Familiarize yourself with platforms like Amazon KDP, Draft2Digital, IngramSpark, and others to distribute your book effectively.

Look for professionals who share your values and understand your vision. This alignment can enhance the overall quality of your project and ensure that your message resonates with readers.

Learning from Others' Mistakes

One of the best ways to navigate the publishing landscape is to learn from the experiences of others. Many authors have faced challenges that resulted in costly mistakes. Here are some common pitfalls to avoid — ones I’ve made in my own publishing journey:

· Skipping Professional Editing: A polished manuscript is essential. Don’t underestimate the value of a good editor, but also trust your own voice. Proofreader is the minimum to catch mistakes.

· Ignoring Marketing: Don’t wait until your book is published to think about marketing. Plan ahead to build anticipation and connect your book to readers who need it. It’s part of caretaking your special work!

· Choosing the Wrong Publishing Service: Research thoroughly to avoid overpriced or ineffective services. I know a guy who paid $6000 and was left with a garage full of books that could have been printed for a fraction of the cost. So beware!

Learn from me about what not to do so you can sidestep these pitfalls and make informed decisions that lead to GospelWise Author success.

Empowerment Through Independent Publishing

Independent publishing is more than just a method; it’s a mindset. It’s about believing in your message and your ability to share it with the world. This empowerment can lead to greater fulfillment and connection with your readers. Here’s how to embrace this journey:

· Believe in Your Voice: Your unique perspective is valuable. Trust that your story matters—with all of its perspectives and experiences.

· Engage with Your Audience: Build relationships with your readers. Their feedback can be invaluable.

· Stay Committed: The road may be challenging, but perseverance is key to overcoming obstacles.

As you navigate this journey, remember that you are not alone. Many authors have walked this path and found success through their dedication and faith — I’m one of them! I’m here to help you publish your book into the world!

How to Avoid Common Publishing Pitfalls

To thrive in the independent publishing landscape, it’s crucial to be aware of common pitfalls and how to avoid them. Here are some strategies:

· Do Your Research: Investigate companies and services before committing. Look for reviews and testimonials. You can often find designers and editors for far less than the overpriced packaged services advertised on Google.

· Budget Wisely: Set aside money to invest for essential services, but avoid overspending on unnecessary packages.

· Network with Other Authors: Join writing groups and forums to gain insights and support from fellow authors, especially finding reputable and reliable designers and proofreaders who can help your book over the finished line.

· Stay Informed: Keep up with industry trends and changes that may affect your publishing journey. Watch this space for insights into publishing for Christian readers.

By being proactive and informed, you can navigate the publishing landscape with confidence and clarity
